The other countdown: Space Fest's final weekend puts five thousand people downtown, two days before the launch window opens

5,000+ expected: BTX Space Fest runs through Saturday in downtown Brownsville with a Maker Faire, robotics, a drone show, and 300 vendors, free

While the pad ran its rehearsal, downtown Brownsville opened a party. The third annual BTX Space Fest runs September 24 to 26, and this year the city stretched it from one day to three: "Space Fest is now going from one day to three days," in the words of Nathan Burkhardt, who directs the Brownsville Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Office of Space Commerce. The footprint grew with the calendar. The main festival holds downtown with roughly 300 vendors and live music, the city's first-ever Brownsville Maker Faire joins the program, and an expansion into Linear Park hosts the FIRST Tech Challenge robotics competition. The Space Fest Pavilion adds a drone show and a Mars Rover display, and Cybertrucks run the shuttle route between the two sites alongside BTX Connect and pedicabs. The city expects 5,000 to 6,000 attendees, and the whole thing is free and open to the public.

The timing is the part no organizer could have booked. The festival's final day is Saturday, September 26, and the launch window for Starship's first orbital attempt opens Monday morning at 7:15, about a 40-minute drive away. If you came to town for the festival, the cheapest upgrade available in South Texas this weekend is two more nights: our viewing guide covers where to stand, and where to stay covers the nights in between. Watch the closure order before you commit to a beach view; the launch-day order hadn't posted as of Friday morning.
