Next up, a ship catch: Musk says catching the ship is the next big milestone, "hopefully" on Flight 15, which he hopes is 4 to 6 weeks out
Elon Musk says Starship's next big goal is to catch the ship, and he hopes it happens on the very next flight. "The big milestone coming up, which is hopefully flight 15, is to catch the ship, making it the first full recovery of an orbital class rocket," Musk said Saturday, speaking on screen at the X Takeover, a fan event put on by Tesla Owners Silicon Valley, as quoted by Sawyer Merritt on X.
- The timing: "Flight 15 hopefully in 4-6 weeks," Musk said. Counted from Saturday, that is Nov. 7 to Nov. 21. NASASpaceflight's unofficial schedule lists Flight 15 from Starbase Pad 2 no earlier than Nov. 8. SpaceX has not announced a date, and Starbase Events still lists Flight 15 as "Q4 2026 (No Date Yet)."
- Flight 14: "That (flight 14) engine glitch doesn't seem to be too much of an issue. The heat shield was robust," Musk said.
- Not confirmed yet: "hopefully" is not a flight plan. NASASpaceflight wrote Friday that "SpaceX could still try to catch both the ship and the booster on Flight 15, but neither has been confirmed," and that changing the mission "could take a bit to get regulatory approval to change the license."
- Ship 42 is back inside: "Ship 42's visit to Massey's was a short one, returning home overnight to Mega Bay 2 just 30 hours after leaving, undergoing at least one cryo test," Elisar Priel of NASASpaceflight posted Saturday with video. Ship 42 is the ship set to fly Flight 15.
What it means here: no closure order yet. The city's beach and road page reads "No public notices at this time," lists no road delays, and lists Boca Chica Beach as open. Launches and engine tests bring Highway 4 and beach closures, which the city posts there. Text BEACH to 1-866-513-3475 for the city's beach updates.
At the coast today: NWS Brownsville has a coastal flood advisory until 7 a.m. Monday, with water "reaching or pushing into the dunes on South Padre Island," and a high rip current risk through this evening. The weather service says vehicles "except those with four wheel drive and high wheel bases, will be unable to be driven on the beach," and the highest water comes near high tide, 5:57 p.m. today.
