Gov.-elect Hinojosa says she asked Texas to take "no action" on Boca Chica land during her transition
Texas Gov.-elect Gina Hinojosa said Thursday, Nov. 5, 2026, that she spoke that morning with the executive director of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and asked that no action be taken during her transition. She was answering a KRGV question about a possible sale of Boca Chica Beach to SpaceX at her first news conference since the election.
"You should know this morning I was pleased to talk to the director of Texas Parks and Wildlife to confirm this issue was not on today's agenda and to request that no action be taken out of respect to this transition," she said, KRGV reported.
It's a request. She didn't say whether the department agreed, or what action her administration might take once she's in office, KPRC reported. We found no statement on it from the department or SpaceX.
- Timing: She's scheduled to be sworn in Jan. 19, 2027. KRGV reported she'll keep monitoring the issue once in office.
- The draft agenda: A draft for the commission's early November meeting included closed-door talk about 1,300 acres in Cameron County, the Texas Tribune reported. The item was pulled from the final agenda. The department asked the Attorney General's office to block release of the draft. The commission's posted agendas for Nov. 4-5, 2026 list no Cameron County item. Its next listed meeting is Jan. 27-28, 2027.
- The agency's line: A department spokesperson told Texas Monthly the commission "is not considering the sale of the Boca Chica property at its November meeting." Sources told the magazine the item could come up at a later date.
- Still unknown: We haven't seen a report that shows who raised the sale. Two sources told Texas Monthly that SpaceX is the prospective buyer.
Background: our Oct. 22 story has the park's history, what a sale would take under state law and why the acreage figures don't match.
Next: we'll report any reply from the department, and any commission agenda that lists the land.
